About

Gerald E. Talbot Community School is a Pre-K through Grade 5 school located off outer Forest Avenue in Portland, Maine. Our school is named in honor of Gerald E. Talbot. Mr. Talbot is one of Portland’s most cherished and respected community leaders. He is an educator, author, historian, military veteran, civil and human rights activist, founding President of the Portland branch of the NAACP, and is the first African American to be elected to Maine’s Legislature and to chair the Maine State Board of Education. His accomplishments include the successful passage of the Maine Fair Housing Bill, the Maine Human Rights Act, and the establishment of the Maine Human Rights Commission.

We are proud of our diverse population of learners from around the world, who speak a total of eleven different languages. Our school is in a community building which also houses a branch of the Portland Public Library, a Greater Portland Health dental office, and space for the Recreation Department of Portland Parks and Recreation, including a community swimming pool. Our grounds include tennis courts, a basketball court, an accessible playscape for children of all abilities, and multiple ball fields. Gardens planted by students dot the area and a community garden has been established.
